Let’s Reclaim our Climate Richness

The restoration of our forest cover to curb the harsh change in climatic conditions is a topic we should be talking about daily and should be included in the priority list of our country.

In as much the whole world is complaining and experiencing the climate change effect, we as a country know our situation.

We no longer know when to expect the long or the short rains and by so we no longer know the perfect time to do farming.

With only 7% of the country having tree cover, Kenya is the least forested country in Africa. That works out as 67 trees per person rather than a global average of 420

But instead of just giving up and suffering the consequences what can we do about the situation is the question we should be asking our self.

The Cabinet on Tuesday (7 Dec 2022) approved the national tree growing restoration campaign aimed at planting 15 billion trees so as to scale up forest cover to 30 per cent by 2030. The Cabinet's move is part of long-term measures to address the devastating effects of climate change and desertification.

This intent has seen rise in most organizations and groups who are planning on actualizing the forest growth mission.

I can bet that if this project works and is actualized then Kenya will get to a level of food self-dependency in due time.

The other day I travelled to Samburu County an arid place and it was so relaxing to find an oasis with amazing breeze courtesy of a group of youths known as Environmental Justice Team led by One Andrew Lokitambaa.

“We intend to apologize to the nature we punished by growing more trees”

This is a move that the government should be serious on. Just imagine if we fix our climatic situation now then am sure we will change the direction of some other discussions like the one Genetically Modified Organisms.
