Since 2016, lawmakers have made known their intentions to audit money given to private institutions as conditional grants.
Government-sponsored students were to be placed in private universities under the policy.
The disclosure was revealed by Wanami Wamboka, chair of the Public Investments Committee on Education and Governance, when Education CS Ezekiel Machogu and other participants in the higher education sector came before the committee.
The government paid out Sh1.9 billion in the 2018–2019 fiscal year, followed by Sh2.5 billion in 2019, Sh2.7 billion in 2020, Sh3.3 billion, and Sh3.1 billion in 2022.
Now at Sh13.7 billion, the money provided to private universities will be audited.
